C. Academic Profile

1. RESEARCH STATEMENT

2. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My pedagogical approach to teaching has always been to use active engagement and innovation to improve the development of others. My goal has always been to inspire academic growth in junior faculty. Through my career, I have sought to identifying gaps in emergency medicine education. In doing so, I have taken a keen interest in publishing case reports of entities that I feel are not well represented or described in emergency medicine. These innovative publications have allowed me to achieve global impact. I thought of it originally as a sort of a hunt for clinical zebras. A journey to find and learn and teach about rare clinical entities.

The digital age has changed the face of traditional teaching and education through Free and Open Access Medicine (FOAM). I have attempted to embrace new innovative technologies (social media, podcast etc.) in medical education whilst linking and promoting more traditional academic methods (journal publications). As an educator in the last decade, I have shifted my focus towards regular appearances on podcasts and social media. These podcasts have been hugely successful with regards to far-reaching global impact and many are leaders in the world of international EM education. I realized that my educational style and clinical teaching approaches were adaptable to many unique EM podcast and social media platforms.  I look forward to continuing to impact EM education through my innovative approach to selecting key EM content for knowledge dissemination.

3. CREATIVE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES STATEMENT

I am an educator with a goal to promote innovation, excellence and to push the boundaries of exemplary professional practice. I have sought to make impactful national contributions through the organization and growth of Continuing Professional Development at University of Toronto. As the Medical Director of Stadium Medicine at the Roger’s Centre for the Toronto Blue Jays, I have aimed to push the frontiers of event medicine and disaster preparation while finding an educational niche for learners. Through my interest in professional practice advancement, I have impacted change in quality improvement and patient safety on a global scale through my lecturing on mitigating medicolegal risk. To put a collection of contributions together really has become the modern-day CV.  So, in recognizing my love of FOAM, I created a website allowing for the display of my career commitment to Creative Professional Activities.
